This one’s landing as part of our limited-edition Cake Drops range, because it’s exactly the kind of bake that deserves a short, glorious life.

We wanted to make something familiar, almost retro. The sort of cake everyone instantly understands, but without it drifting into boring. Made with deep, dark chocolate sponge, lifted with rich rye flour that brings depth rather than weight, and loaded with single-origin Colombian coffee for flavour that actually shows up.

Rye is doing a lot of the quiet work here. It sharpens the chocolate, reins in the sweetness, and gives the loaf that grown-up, slightly savoury edge that keeps you going back for another slice.

And then there’s the icing. Thick, generous dollops of coffee buttercream, whipped until pale and fluffy, because being stingy with icing is not something we’re interested in. Finished with a light dusting of cocoa powder, just enough to hint at what’s underneath.

This is a cake for coffee lovers. The kind of loaf that feels right on a café counter, next to a flat white. Oliver’s only made a small batch, so once it’s gone, it’s gone.
